The story of Brighton Gin begins with a morning jog by local resident and restauranteur Kathy Caton, feeling slightly worse for wear after a very late night out. Brighton is a place that needs to get away with it on a frequent basis, and I thought ta da, the spirit of Brighton – Brighton needs its own gin. The perspective is largely borrowed from classic tradition, but the citrus zest on the palate really I think pushes Brighton Gin slightly into the world of contemporary gin. A few years on and not only has Brighton taken its gin to its heart but we’ve picked up awards and fans much further afield.
Beginning with years of experimentation, different ingredients, combinations, distilling techniques and approaches, award-winning freelance broadcaster, producer and presenter Kathy Caton and her team finally found their perfect blend.
In their first year of production, each bottle top was waxed using a makeshift iron-bottomed pan and a hotplate, although thankfully for the safety of all concerned, they now have a professional waxing pot. It’s now enjoyed across the generations, all drinking it in different ways, and it doesn’t have that perceived gender barrier that, say, single malt whisky does.
