About this deal

You might pronounce Haslam absurd, a frantically self-renovating social butterfly who should never have made it past the Sixties, but there is something astonishing about his sheer devotion to his chosen cause. For almost all of his 70 years, he has devoted every waking hour to networking, party-going and rubbing shoulders with the wealthy and beautiful. The Independent

Her fourth book, a novel titled High Time, was published in June 2023 by Bloomsbury and Knopf. [10] Richly textured, elegantly told and often as surprising as its subject, Hannah Rothschild's biography of her great-aunt is a moving tribute to a fascinating and original woman' Country LifeArriving in New York, Nica was shunned by society but accepted by the musicians. They gave her friendship; she gave them material and emotional support. Her convertible Bentley was a familiar sight outside the clubs and she drank whisky from a hip flask disguised as a Bible. At the core of the narrative lies a weighty question about the true value of work of art in a market that has transformed to a convenient way for the rich to bury their wealth and polish their reputations, a cutthroat game that public museums and the government can barely play. While only a cynic would say that a painting is worth what someone is willing to pay, the story itself is not cynical even though most of the characters are. Scroll past the BOOK REPORT section for a cut-and-paste of the DESCRIPTION of it from them if you want to read my thoughts on the book in the context of that summary. Craig, Amanda (13 February 2020). " 'House of Trelawney' by Hannah Rothschild review – comic family saga". The Guardian . Retrieved 27 May 2020.

I have discovered Hannah Rothschild late - her The Improbability of Love was published in 2015. It is the perfect lying-on-the-sofa-with-cake read, being a witty, knowledgeable, sprawling, ingenious insider satire set in the art world. It has art dealers, Russian billionaires, hedgies, sheiks and a-love story. Some of the story is narrated by a painting, but don't let that put you off, it's pure joy from start to finish. Her next novel, House of Trelawney, about the rise and fall of some Cornish poshos, is out in February and I loved that even more.'

Success!

In 2008, The Telegraph wrote that “the Rothschild name has become synonymous with money and power to a degree that no other family has quite matched”, and, until a century ago, the Rothschilds, the most famous of all European banking dynasties, were the richest family in the world (the title currently goes to the Walton family who founded Walmart). But whereas the Roys, the dysfunctional American global-media family in the HBO/Sky drama, use “PJs” (private jets) like buses, Rothschild insists her family aren’t so flashy. If you're in need of a Succession replacement then this tale of a crumbling English dynasty clinging on to the past while coping with the fallout of the 2008 crash is for you. Rothschild is a mischievous narrator and this story is pure pleasure from the word go.' Stylist Magazine The Honourable Hannah Mary Rothschild". American Academy of Arts and Sciences. June 2021 .
