About this deal

Now, Tecsun has definitely made progress since the horrendous implementation of SYNC on the PL-880, which wasn’t even an official feature. But it’s disappointing that given the design features in the 501, especially the wonderful dual speakers, a way has not been found to resolve this issue which obviously involves the DSP chip that is the brain of the receiver. Video: Detailed testing of Tecsun H-501x This is what i am suspecting ( as i was for a while beta tester) & not in any way to write bad about Tecsun because i already own 2 radios of them … A noise canceller is no the answer to your problem. All it will do is to convert the noise to silence including the wanted program.

I see your use a long-wire aerial-antenna; that should bring in a hell of a signal, due the receivers very good sensitivity across the HF band. I use a homebrew small magnetic balanced loop, H-Field type, due living in a small flat here in Jersey the Channel Islands, between France and England the UK… lots of QRN-M noise, so magnetic aerial-antenna is the only way to go and provides some directional reduction of QRN-M. Class AB type Audio Power Amplifiers & ultra -dynamic full range speakers, with excellent sound qualityI have both the PL-880 and the S-8800 along with other radios. At first I was looking forward to the 990 when it was announced. Not so much anymore. It just doesn’t add anything new that I really want. SSB functionality is excellent. The ability to adjust bandwidth makes SW listening so enjoyable with the ability to improve reception and listen ability of even weak transmissions. I’m going to cover SSB in a separate article, comparing not only these two radios, but also the Tecsun PL-330, XHDATA D-808, Eton Elite Executive and the RTL-SDR Blog dongle with SDR Sharp software. Both the PL-660 and the PL-880 did quite well in my first round of testing. Particular attention has been paid to the audio output of this receiver to enhance the listening experience. Apart from bass and treble control, the speaker is driven by a Class AB power amplifier capable of 450mW output. There are also many user-adjustable “secret” parameters, to allow users to customise their receiver preferences. Often, my advice is to consider older portables that are still quite competitive, especially considering the reduction in the number of stations still on shortwave. These would include such classics as the Grundig Satellit 700/500, the SONY

Shortwave Reception: Fairly clear winner is the Tecsun PL-880 not only is the PL-880 easier to use but it received a number of stations pretty clear were the 909x was barely able to pull them out of the noise. The total number was pretty close but the number of honestly listenable stations was clearly in the PL-880s favour. If any SSB listeners have the 880 then I absolutely would recommend getting the 990. ( provided it’s proven they fixed the agc fault ) In the box (see photos) Tecsun includes 2 18650 lithium batteries, a 5 volt double USB A charging cube, a mini to mini cord, a USB charging cable, and to boot, a pair of fairly high quality wired earphones complete with spare ear tips. PERFORMANCE POSITIVE: Another interesting feature not found on other radios: Tecsun has created a dual charging system for the 501 which uses two 18650 batteries. Tecsun has mostly fixed the problem with synchronous mode which is now a regular as opposed to a hidden feature.
